Caricature Artists – What Do They Do?

I was having a conversation in an online class about my business Faces & Fortunes. All of us in the class have our own businesses or provide services as entrepreneurs.

I mentioned that one area of specialty is caricature entertainment at parties and events. I was surprised to hear one of the students ask what it was. When you are heavily involved in a service business you tend to attract clients who are specifically looking for your service. And I have been drawing caricatures at parties for over 15 years. In the Philadelphia metropolitan area where we operate, most people have seen or at least heard of a caricature artist entertaining at a Bar Mitzvah or other type of party.

So, Lesson One is never to assume that everyone understands or knows about the type of service you provide.

With that long introduction I’d like to briefly describe just what a caricature artist does at a party.

If you have ever stopped to watch a street artist draw then you understand the appeal of caricature entertainment. Likewise, when a caricature artist shows up at your party, your guests will come by and watch as the volunteer in the hot seat gets his turn.

When you provide caricature entertainment, one or more caricature artists set up at your event and create quick sketch drawings of your guests on the spot.

Some clients use the caricature drawings as a party favor. Many guests will frame the drawings and keep them for years.

Business clients who are offering caricature entertainment as part of promotional events such as trade shows and open houses use the drawings to aid their marketing efforts. They may choose to have their logos, contact information and marketing message imprinted onto the drawing paper for this purpose.

Typically, caricature artists are seated in one place. They set up an easel or drawing table and guests come to them to watch or be drawn.

Caricature entertainment or live quick-sketch caricature can be found at all kinds of events ranging from family and children’s birthday parties to large corporate promotional events. Personally, I have drawn at gala fundraisers, high school after-prom parties, Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, employee appreciation and team-building events and college events.

My clients have been families, businesses of all sizes, schools and colleges, and community organizations.  People have hired us to draw at birthday parties, anniversary parties, holiday parties, pool parties, retirement parties, family reunions, and company picnics.

Occupants of my ‘hot seat’ come from every walk of life  and have ranged from babes in arms to people in their nineties, and even pets(!)

Caricature entertainment is extremely versatile and works for guests of every age group.

But the best part is that both clients and guests find caricature entertainment to be fun. And the caricature artist is often the most popular person at the party.

Which makes you look good as the party host.

What a fun job you have! Good job of explaining it. Perhaps your experience will help someone else who is trying to get their own business going and explain it well.

Wow! What fun. I bet you must enjoy giving people feedback in your drawings. This is important because we cannot see our contribution without feedback from others.
