Party Fortunetelling – Challenges for the Party Reader
Many people who are having a fortune teller provide party entertainment for the first time have difficulty finding one who is well suited to the task who chooses this type of work.
That’s not surprising because many competent readers prefer not to work under the difficult party entertainment where they are likely to run into guests that don’t take a reader seriously. Guests that try to ‘test’ the reader because they have to see if he or she is ‘real,’ guests that, say, drink a little too much, and those who put up a blank wall are common at these events.
In a private session, a competent reader begins by establishing a rapport with her subject and the session is a back-and-forth exchange between reader and client.
But parties are fast-paced environments that allow for little time for the reader to establish rapport with the subject. Instead, readers interact with many people in a short period.
Readers who want to do party work must find ways to cope with these conditions. They must also be able to maintain strict boundaries, limiting the time they spend with individual guests. Some guests are so hungry for information, they don’t always appreciate that they are being unfair to other guests and the party host when they push the reader for the equivalent of a long private session when readings must be kept short to keep the line moving.
As a result, many competent readers, who have the expertise and skill to do party work, choose not to.
